Owl's facial discs, also called the "ruff" has special feathers that help to funnel sounds into the ear openings.  The bigger the ruff, the better the bird can hear. alt
 

Barred Owl Mating Call

This is a great example of a barred owl mating call.  Folks in the South say this sounds like "Who cooks for you, who cooks for you all".  Note the trill on the end - this is a female barred owl.
